MHW RTG performance during LES 8/9 and Voyager missions
Kelly, C. E.
In New Mexico Univ., Transactions of the Fourth Symposium on Space Nuclear Power Systems p 197-200 (SEE N88-24254 17-73)
The MHW RTG is an isotope (plutonium 238) fueled static power supply operating on the thermoelectric energy conversion principle using silicon-germanium (SiGe) semiconductors.
It provides a nomimal electrical power output of 150 watts with a thermal inventory of 2400 watts at BOM (beginning of mission) and was designed for a minimum of 5 years of space operation.
BOM specific power is 4.2 W kg with an overall envelope of 40 cm x 58 cm. A description of the RTGs and the mission power profiles are described.
The major components of the RTG are the heat source (IHS), RCA silicon-germanium thermoelectric couples (thermopile), a multifoil thermal insulation system and a beryllium outer housing.
